Drawing For Animation: From The Real To The Surreal
These are some of the drawings I made for the drawing for animation class looking at normal everyday objects and adding a strange and surreal twist.
For my first object I looked at my front door. I adjusted the peep hole to an eye and painting it as if it were melting and/or burning. I like the idea behind this, but as it is my first attempt the sketch turned out quite messy and crude, and I could definitely refine the drawing and rethink the outlining of the image.
I started drawing a banana and as I was drawing it I re-imagined it as an old telephone.
I think this drawing works well as a sketch and I much prefer this idea to the previous one. However, it could be improved in quality in terms of colouring and shading. The drawing would also be improved to fit the brief more if it were warped more.
I struggled to think of things to draw for this brief and missed a day. For this I worked with the idea of a popcorn box eating popcorn. This drawing works well to fit the brief with a strong concept of surrealism. The misshapen, sketched, unfinished quality the drawing has, works well with the brief.
I continued with the idea of changing normal objects into something they're not, I drew a robot bathing in a cup of tea. Using felt pens I was able to create bold outlines and cross-hatching to build tone and suggest shape in the object.
For this brief I think I was able to produce a variety of images that will be useful in the future as references, I have managed to experiment with new materials allowing me to try out new techniques and styles that I enjoyed working in and adds a cartoon style to the images. I do think that for this brief I could have experimented more with style and warping the images to make them more surreal.
